If you need assistance choosing the right artwork for your home or business, Marbella based art workshop Studio 2 provides some top tips for adding original artwork and decorative items to your home’s design scheme, without breaking the bank.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and this is certainly true when it comes to choosing art and decoration. Every year, creative professionals forecast the next big trends, be it colours, textures or colours, but when it comes to decorating our own homes, all that matters is whether we will feel comfortable and enjoy living in it.

Works of art are also extremely subjective, one person may adore Picasso’s Blue Period, whereas another may be drawn to decorative items such as vases or sculptures to make a statement. It all comes down to personal taste, the available space and of course the cost. That said, even if your budget doesn’t stretch to paying millions for an original masterpiece, there are plenty of opportunities for adding affordable art to your home allowing you to create an exciting and original space.

Whether you are just adding a finishing touch in an awkward corner or a splash of colour to inject interest, it doesn’t need to be a difficult task. Here are some points to take into consideration before you purchase your artwork.

Find the room’s focal point

Take a look at the room that you plan to decorate and look for the focal point, the place where your eye will be drawn. This is where you should consider displaying the most prominent piece of art. For example, if you plan on investing in bespoke artwork, perhaps consider a dramatic custom canvas painting to deliver the most impact in the focal point of the room. Not only would it draw the eye, it would provide a talking point for anyone entering the room.

Original can also be affordable

As touched upon above, you may love the old masters or the clean bright lines of Piet Mondrian but realistically not many people have this type of budget. Instead of opting for prints of famous artworks, you could instead source original pieces that have been painted in a similar style, medium or colour palette which would look just as powerful.

Custom artwork commissions

The in-house artists at Studio 2 can create custom artwork based on your specific requirements, taking into account the style, size, colour and format that you prefer. Commissioning bespoke artwork allows you to hang a unique piece of work that is personal to your taste and tailored to fit in your home without breaking the bank. It is also possible to choose finished artworks (abstract, contemporary, modern or traditional in watercolours, acrylics, oils, neon and much more) which are displayed in the Puerto Banús studio.

Make the frames matter

If you want to go down the route of displaying prints, you can add interest by using original frames so that they become the focus and not the quality of the image. The colour, textures, sizes of the frames and the manner in which they are displayed can all create impact. With the right imagination, there is no reason why you can’t achieve a magazine or Pinterest worthy display on a shoestring.

Grouping on a gallery wall

If you want to curate a collection of artworks on a gallery wall but don’t want it to look contrived, it is possible to get the desired effect by thinking outside of the box with regards to colour. Firstly, not all frames need to be the same colour, they don’t even need to be the same material, size or shape.
Alternatively, if you prefer the colour of the frames to match, you could shake things up by using different sizes and shapes. It doesn’t even matter if you decide to hang a mix of photos, prints or original paintings… it is your gallery wall, the choice is yours.

In fact, a gallery wall doesn’t even need to have paintings, pictures or posters, it can include just about anything, including mirrors, hats, masks, posters and flowers or anything that can be hung on the wall.

Coffee tables books

If you prefer to keep your walls clear with just a few pieces of decoration there are other ways to inject art into your interior design. Exquisitely produced coffee table books can add a touch of sophistication to your room, providing the opportunity to flick through pages of beautifully presented photographs whilst you sit back and relax.

If you like it… buy it

Not everyone has a creative eye but the good news is that you don’t need it. Art and decoration are not about following trends or liking the ‘right’ style, you should follow your personal preferences. Rather than feeling intimidated about choosing artwork or decorative items for you home, go with your gut; if you like it, buy it.

Pay more buy less

If you are undecided whether to buy cheaper items more often or to pay more, it is worth remembering that if you buy well, you need to buy less often.

Finally, as a rule of thumb to help you decide whether you have chosen the right piece, ask yourself if you could look at it for the next 10 years. If the answer is yes and it fits the space, then go for it!
